AeroOne™ Newsletter

March 2025

Dear Aeros:

Flying supersonic.  When I was a young lawyer in the '90s British Airways extended a limited time offer for plebes like me to fly one-way between JFK and LHR on Concorde (there is no "the" before the name) for a mere $5,000.00. At the time, I couldn't afford the return economy ticket let alone $5,000.00. Sadly, common sense prevailed and I missed my chance. What a mistake that was because I have always been a huge aviation enthusiast and flying supersonic is the pinnacle. Flying twice the speed of sound in a single class cabin with "out of this world" service is to elevate oneself to the one percent of one percent.  Did you know that 80 percent of the passengers on Concorde were frequent commuters?

Marshall McLuhan famously coined the phrase "the medium is the message". McLuhan was referring to the dawning of the television age. But the same holds true for supersonic air travel. Getting there IS the message. I remember the rush I felt screaming through the air in my little jet at 689 miles per hour (ground speed) shortly after I got her. Try double that in air speed  at 60,000 feet above the earth.

Once again, we are on the cusp of a new supersonic age. The Sonic Boom(experimental model) has just taken to the skies, flying supersonic but with no boom. The final iteration (above) is set to enter passenger service by 2029. Flying supersonic with no boom should broaden the route possibilities. And I understand a private jet version is in the works as well. I won't make the same mistake twice. Would you?

In this issue:

1. Commentary -- Delta and Learjet recent  crashes. (Caution, Delta story may make you think twice about flying certain commercial airlines).
2. Private aviation summary -- January, 2025.
3. Topic of the Month --  Netjets v. AeroOne.
4. Article -- Overhead bin baggage theft (airlines)
5. Aircraft of the Month -- Learjet 31.

Happy Flying,
Roger Proctor, CEO

PS: AeroOne has a new motto. "Freedom." Freedom, simply put, is what you get when you become an AeroOne owner. Special thanks to Stan Nieumierzycki for articulating the AeroOne experience, something he is very familiar with.

Delta and Learjet Crashes

With 100 hours Part 121 time as SIC you can expect to elevate to a coveted PIC position within 21 months. Combined with one of the most aggressive DEI programs in the industry what could possibly go wrong? My PIC has over 7,000 hours total time, some of which was on an F15 fighter jet, and 1,100 hours on my type. You may want to check out who's upfront when or if you board a commercial flight next time? Our pilots have been advised not to fly airlines with DEI programs, including but not limited to Delta. Their lives are just too valuable to take that risk.

If the leaked evidence is confirmed then this would be the second DEI related crash in less than four weeks. Bottom line the PIC is still responsible for the crash. It is his judgment in allowing such an inexperienced pilot land a fully loaded aircraft in dodgy conditions that will be scrutinized.  Hopefully the truth will come out.

AeroOne does not engage in DEI hiring practices.  Our staff and crew are hired solely on the basis of merit, regardless of gender, race or ethnicity.

Learjet 35A          SDL                                                 02/10/2025

A Learjet 35A carrying 3 passengers and 2 crew travelling Part 91 from AUS to SDL lost a landing gear upon landing, veered off the runway and collided with a stationary Gulfstream 200 on a private ramp. Attached is a very detailed preliminary NTSB Report, which is worth a read.  The PIC was killed and three others were severely injured. Weather was not a factor.

NTSB findings:
1.The left main landing gear malfunctioned in flight and separated from the fuselage immediately upon landing causing the aircraft to veer to the left and travel out of control with compromised braking capability.
2. The aircraft did not have thrust reversers.
3. Less than 6 months prior the same crew experienced a serious hard landing with the same aircraft, touching down before reaching the runway tarmac.
4. The same PIC hired a "friendly mechanic" to conduct a hard landing inspection.
5.The "friendly mechanic" reassembled and reattached the gear improperly.

Comment:
In my opinion this was a "motley crew" consisting of a thrifty owner (why would you not have TRs?) and flight crew that exercised poor judgment in hiring a "friendly mechanic" to possibly cover up the extent of damage caused by their hard landing?  The PIC paid for this error of judgment with his life.

Understanding and learning from these horrible events is critically important. That is what has made aviation safe.

AeroOne has thrust reversers on all aircraft. We only use OEM certified repair centers for all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance events.

Conclusion: In my opinion these two crashes along with the American D.C. deadly crash in January were completely preventable. Experience and proper maintenance go a long way to saving lives. Fledgling pilot, no matter their background. deserve and need worthy experienced mentors to train them well and recommend promotion only when objectively worthy.
